DELSU Grading System: GPA, CGPA and Degree Classes Explained
How DELSU students can work out their GPA and CGPA, what the degree classes are, and what a CGPA below 1.50 can mean for you.
If you study at Delta State University, Abraka, GPA and CGPA will track your progress from your first semester. Here's how they work, with a worked example.
We couldn't find an official DELSU grading table online, so the letter grades below are the standard Nigerian 5-point scale. Check them against your handbook or a department notice before you rely on the exact score bands.
The grading scale (standard Nigerian 5-point)
| Score | Grade | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| 70 to 100 | A | 5 |
| 60 to 69 | B | 4 |
| 50 to 59 | C | 3 |
| 45 to 49 | D | 2 |
| 40 to 44 | E | 1 |
| Below 40 | F | 0 |
How to calculate your GPA
GPA = Total quality points ÷ Total credit units
Quality points for a course = grade point × credit units.
Worked example
| Course | Units | Grade | Grade point | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Course 1 | 3 | C | 3 | 9 |
| Course 2 | 3 | B | 4 | 12 |
| Course 3 | 2 | B | 4 | 8 |
| Course 4 | 2 | D | 2 | 4 |
| Course 5 | 2 | F | 0 | 0 |
| Total | 12 | 33 |
GPA = 33 ÷ 12 = 2.75
The F in a 2-unit course cost this student almost a full point of GPA compared with a pass. This is why you should never ignore a course, even a small one.
How to calculate your CGPA
CGPA = Total quality points (all semesters) ÷ Total credit units (all semesters)
Add everything from every semester so far, then divide. Do not average your GPAs. See how to calculate GPA and CGPA in Nigerian universities.
Degree classes
On the 5.0 scale, the commonly published classes are:
| CGPA | Class |
|---|---|
| 4.50 to 5.00 | First Class |
| 3.50 to 4.49 | Second Class Upper |
| 2.40 to 3.49 | Second Class Lower |
| 1.50 to 2.39 | Third Class |
Probation and retention
Department rules we found say a student with a CGPA below 1.50 is placed on probation, and that students need at least a 1.00 CGPA to be retained from 100 level onward. These rules can change and may differ by faculty, so ask your department for the current policy. For general advice, see carry-overs and academic probation.
Tips for protecting your CGPA
- Take 100 level seriously. Low early grades are hard to repair.
- Register every course. See what to do if you forgot to register a course.
- Do not skip continuous assessment.
- Put effort into high-unit courses.
- Clear carry-overs early.
- Track your CGPA every semester.
Skip the arithmetic
The MonoEd GPA tools can calculate your GPA and CGPA from your courses and scores. Use the DELSU 5-point scale from the table above, and check the result against your own working once.
Beyond the semester
Once you reach SIWES, keep your logbook daily (guide, or use the MonoEd SIWES Logbook), then write up your report. Your final year project follows, and the topic lists can give you ideas early.
