JAMB and University Admission Guide for Nigerian Students
Written by Mohammad-Jamiu Balogun · Last substantively reviewed: October 2026
Most Nigerian students gain admission to a university or polytechnic through the JAMB Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), then meet the O’Level and other requirements of the school they choose. Doing it well comes down to a few decisions made in order: your course, your school, a target score and how you prepare.
This guide takes you through that process step by step and links to MonoEd’s detailed guides at each stage, including subject combinations for 85 courses. JAMB’s rules, fees and dates change every year, so always confirm the current details on the official JAMB website.

Before you register for UTME
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| You have confirmed the registration dates, fees and requirements on the official JAMB website | Details change every year. Unofficial posts and group chats are often out of date. |
| You know the UTME subject combination for your chosen course | An incorrect combination can affect your admission chances even with a high score. |
| Your O’Level results meet the requirements for your course | Courses usually require specific subjects and grades. Check them early so you can resit if needed. |
| Your name and date of birth match your credentials exactly | Mismatches can cause problems during registration and admission. |
| Your phone number and email are active and belong to you | Registration messages and results go to the contact details you provide. |
| You have shortlisted a first-choice and a realistic backup school and course | Choices should reflect both your goals and your likely score against past cut-offs. |
| You are using only official JAMB channels and authorised centres | Fake registration sites target candidates. Never share your details with unofficial sources. |
JAMB and admission frequently asked questions
What is JAMB UTME?
The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is the national entrance examination used for admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. It is conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and is scored out of 400.
How many subjects do I write in UTME?
Candidates write four subjects: Use of English and three subjects related to their chosen course. The right combination depends on the course, so check the JAMB subject combination for your course before you register.
What is a good JAMB score?
It depends on your course and school. Competitive courses and schools set higher cut-off marks, while others admit candidates with lower scores. Check the cut-off marks for your target course and school rather than aiming at a single number.
Is the UTME score enough to get admission?
Not always. Your UTME score is one factor. Admission also depends on your O’Level results, the course and school you chose, available places and any additional screening your institution sets. Check each school’s requirements.
What is the difference between UTME and Direct Entry?
UTME is the route for candidates entering at the first-year level with O’Level results. Direct Entry is for candidates who already hold qualifications such as an ND, NCE, IJMB or JUPEB and typically join a degree programme at a higher level. Requirements vary by school.
Can I study with a low JAMB score?
Yes, though your options narrow. Some courses and schools set lower cut-off marks, and other routes such as polytechnics or NOUN may suit you. Read the guide to courses you can study with a low JAMB score before choosing.
Where should I confirm JAMB dates, fees and rules?
Always use the official JAMB website and the instructions given when you register. Dates, fees and rules change from year to year, so anything older than the current cycle may be out of date.
