UNIOSUN Grading System: GPA, CGPA and Degree Classes Explained
UNIOSUN students: how the grading works, why 45 is the pass mark under the newer scale, and how to calculate your CGPA.
UNIOSUN students keep asking two things: what's the pass mark, and how is my CGPA worked out? Here are both answers, with an example.
We couldn't find an official grading table, so the scale below is how student guides describe it. Older tables had an E grade for 40 to 44, so check your handbook to confirm which one applies to your set.
The UNIOSUN grading scale
| Score | Grade | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| 70 to 100 | A | 5 |
| 60 to 69 | B | 4 |
| 50 to 59 | C | 3 |
| 45 to 49 | D | 2 |
| 0 to 44 | F | 0 |
Under this table, 45 percent is the minimum pass mark. That is higher than the 40 percent pass mark used in some other universities, so a 42 that would have been an E elsewhere is an F here.
How to calculate your GPA
GPA = Total quality points ÷ Total credit units
Quality points for a course = grade point × credit units.
Worked example
| Course | Units | Grade | Grade point | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Course 1 | 3 | B | 4 | 12 |
| Course 2 | 3 | A | 5 | 15 |
| Course 3 | 2 | B | 4 | 8 |
| Course 4 | 2 | C | 3 | 6 |
| Course 5 | 1 | A | 5 | 5 |
| Total | 11 | 46 |
GPA = 46 ÷ 11 = 4.18
How to calculate your CGPA
CGPA = Total quality points (all semesters) ÷ Total credit units (all semesters)
Add everything from every semester so far, then divide. Do not average your GPAs. See how to calculate GPA and CGPA in Nigerian universities.
Degree classes
On the standard 5-point scale, the commonly published classes are:
| CGPA | Class |
|---|---|
| 4.50 to 5.00 | First Class |
| 3.50 to 4.49 | Second Class Upper |
| 2.40 to 3.49 | Second Class Lower |
| 1.50 to 2.39 | Third Class |
| 1.00 to 1.49 | Pass |
Confirm the exact bands with your department.
Tips for protecting your CGPA
- Take 100 level seriously.
- Register every course on time. See what to do if you forgot to register a course.
- Do not skip continuous assessment. With a 45 percent pass mark, every mark counts.
- Put effort into high-unit courses.
- Clear carry-overs early. See carry-overs and academic probation.
- Track your CGPA each semester.

When SIWES and your project come
You don't need them yet, but it helps to know what's coming: a SIWES logbook (how to fill it, plus the MonoEd SIWES Logbook), a SIWES report and a final year project. Browse the project topics whenever you're curious.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is the UNIOSUN grading system?
A 5-point scale from A (70 to 100, 5 points) down to F, with 45 as the lowest passing score under the scheme most guides describe.
What is the pass mark?
45 under the newer scheme. If your set used the older table, an E at 40 to 44 may still count, so check with your department.
What CGPA is a First Class?
4.50 to 5.00.
Is UNIOSUN on a 4.0 or 5.0 scale?
5.0.
How do I calculate my CGPA?
Multiply each course's grade point by its units, add the quality points across semesters, and divide by the total units.
Where can I find the official table?
In your student handbook, or from your department or examinations office.
Can I improve my CGPA after a bad semester?
Yes, with strong results later and by clearing failed courses as the rules allow.
