UNIZIK Grading System: Grades, GPA, CGPA and Degree Classes Explained
UNIZIK grading explained from the school's own regulations: grade points, how to work out your GPA and CGPA, and the degree classes.
Nnamdi Azikiwe University publishes its grading rules in its General and Academic Regulations. This post puts them in plain language, with a worked example, so you can see exactly where you stand.
The UNIZIK grading scale
| Score | Grade | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| 70 to 100 | A | 5.00 |
| 60 to 69 | B | 4.00 |
| 50 to 59 | C | 3.00 |
| 45 to 49 | D | 2.00 |
| 40 to 44 | E | 1.00 |
| 0 to 39 | F | 0.00 |
The regulations explain that the mark you score in each course has a letter grade equivalent, and each letter grade has a numerical value called a grade point.
How to calculate your GPA
GPA = Total quality points ÷ Total credit units
Quality points for a course = grade point × credit units.
Worked example
| Course | Units | Grade | Grade point | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Course 1 | 4 | B | 4 | 16 |
| Course 2 | 3 | B | 4 | 12 |
| Course 3 | 3 | C | 3 | 9 |
| Course 4 | 2 | D | 2 | 4 |
| Course 5 | 2 | A | 5 | 10 |
| Total | 14 | 51 |
GPA = 51 ÷ 14 = 3.64
How to calculate your CGPA
CGPA = Total quality points (all semesters) ÷ Total credit units (all semesters)
Add the quality points and the units from every semester so far, then divide. Do not average your GPAs. See our full guide on how to calculate GPA and CGPA in Nigerian universities, and the difference between them in GPA vs CGPA.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

For degree classification, the regulations list 1.00 to 1.49 as a Pass and below 1.00 as a Fail.

5.0.
Where can I read the official rules?
