What is SIWES?

SIWES stands for Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme.

Duration:

• Universities: engineering students at some universities do 3 months (12 weeks) at 300 level and 6 months (24 weeks) at 400 level. Most other fields, such as Computer Science, Agriculture and the sciences, do a straight 6 months (24 weeks).
• Polytechnics and colleges of education: 4 months (16 weeks).

What is IT?

IT simply means Industrial Training. It describes the placement itself: the work you do in a company or organisation.

• IT is the practical experience, whether or not it falls under SIWES.
• Some students in courses that are not under SIWES still do IT, but it is organised by the school or department without ITF involvement.

So SIWES is the scheme, and IT is the training itself.

Which one applies to you?

Answer these three questions:

1. Is your course approved for SIWES? Check your department or SIWES unit, or see our list of courses that do SIWES. Courses that do SIWES in Nigeria
2. Does your school give you a SIWES logbook and ITF forms? If so, you are on SIWES.
3. Does your department treat it as a credit-bearing course you must pass to graduate? If so, treat it as SIWES.

• Yes to these: follow ITF guidelines, submit your forms, keep a signed logbook and get your school supervisor's approval.
• No: your IT is probably organised by your department without the ITF. Ask your coordinator what you must submit, because most schools still want proof of what you did.

What you need to submit

Under SIWES you will generally need a placement letter, the SPE 1 or SCAF form, a weekly signed logbook, ITF Form 8 and a technical report. Each has its own deadline.

Under IT outside SIWES your department sets the rules. Ask what it needs. Usually this is some combination of a letter from the company, a logbook or activity record, and a short report.

Either way, you will need to show proof of what you did, and that is where many students struggle.

Which term do I use on my report?

Use the term your school's guideline uses, on your cover page and in Chapter One. Some schools write "SIWES" throughout, others write "Industrial Training" or "IT", and some use both. If your guideline has a sample cover page, copy its wording exactly.
