SIWES Placement for Mechanical Engineering in Lagos and Abuja

Mechanical Engineering students have more placement options than most, but the best ones go early. A good placement gives you hands-on work with machines, maintenance and workshop tools, and plenty to write about in your report.

The lists come from the MonoEd SIWES Finder's researched organisations. A listing is a lead and not a promise of a place, and many of these don't advertise SIWES openings, so contact each one and confirm.

How to apply

  1. Start three to six months early. Industrial placements go fast.
  2. Get your school letter from the SIWES unit.
  3. Write a short application letter and a one-page CV. See how to write a placement request letter and CV for SIWES.
  4. Apply to 10 to 15 places, including smaller workshops and fabrication firms, which often give more hands-on work than large companies.
  5. Visit in person and ask for the HR or training officer. Wear neat, simple clothes.
  6. Follow up after one or two weeks.
  7. Get an acceptance letter and submit it to your SIWES unit.

Things to check before you accept

  • Will you work on real maintenance or production tasks, or only observe?
  • Are there safety rules and protective equipment?
  • Who will supervise you and sign your logbook?
  • What are the hours, and what will transport cost?
  • Do you know the duration? Some engineering programmes use a shorter first SIWES. See how long SIWES lasts.
  • Will you be paid? See do SIWES students get paid?

Once you start

Write down each task, the tools you used and the measurements you took. The MonoEd SIWES Logbook helps you draft weekly entries, and the MonoEd SIWES Report Generator turns your notes into a first draft of your report.

Then plan your final year project. See project ideas for Mechanical Engineering students and our Mechanical Engineering project topics.
