SIWES Supervisor Comments: 40 Examples for Your Logbook

Quick summary:

A SIWES supervisor comment is a short remark your supervisor writes in your logbook, usually at the end of each week and again at the end of training. Good comments are specific: they mention what you did, how you did it, and one thing to improve. Below are 40 examples you can show a busy supervisor, grouped by situation.

Your logbook has a space for your industry-based supervisor to comment, usually every week, and a space for your school-based supervisor when they visit. Many students reach the end of training with that space empty, or with "Good" written forty times. Assessors notice.

The examples below are for you to show your supervisor, not to write yourself. The comment must be in their handwriting, with their signature and the date. Writing it for them can get your logbook rejected.

What a good supervisor comment looks like

A useful comment does three things in one or two sentences:

  1. Names the work: "Assisted with network cabling in the admin block."
  2. Judges the quality: "Worked carefully and finished on time."
  3. Points forward: "Should practise crimping without supervision next week."

It ends with the supervisor's signature, name, and date, and sometimes the company stamp.

Weekly comments for good progress

  1. Punctual all week. Followed instructions and completed assigned tasks without supervision.
  2. Showed good understanding of the procedures taught this week. Keep it up.
  3. Quick to learn. Handled the data entry task accurately.
  4. Asked useful questions and took notes. Good attitude to work.
  5. Assisted the team well during the site inspection. Safety rules observed.
  6. Completed the lab analyses correctly and recorded results neatly.
  7. Worked well with other staff. Reliable and polite.
  8. Has improved since last week. Now operates the equipment with confidence.
  9. Prepared the weekly report on time and with few errors.
  10. Good use of initiative in troubleshooting the faulty system.

Weekly comments that point out areas to improve

  1. Good effort, but needs to improve punctuality.
  2. Understands the theory. Needs more hands-on practice with the tools.
  3. Logbook entries are too brief. Should describe tasks in more detail.
  4. Should ask questions earlier instead of waiting until a problem grows.
  5. Work was accurate but slow. Speed will come with practice.
  6. Needs to follow safety procedures more strictly on site.
  7. Showed interest this week. Should take more notes during demonstrations.
  8. Absent on one day without notice. Attendance must improve.

End-of-training comments

Many logbooks have a final page for an overall remark. Examples:

  2. Has acquired practical skills in [area]. Recommended for future employment.
  3. Punctual, respectful and eager to learn throughout the programme.
  4. Started slowly but improved steadily. Now competent in routine tasks.
  5. An asset to the department during the training period. We wish him/her well.

School supervisor comments

When your lecturer visits, they may write a short remark too:

  1. Logbook is up to date and well kept. Student is gaining relevant experience.
  2. Placement is relevant to the course. Entries should include more technical detail.
  3. Student has settled in well. Supervisor reports good conduct.
  4. Some weekly entries are missing. Student should update the logbook promptly.
  5. Satisfactory progress. Continue to record all activities daily.

What to do if your supervisor writes nothing

This is common, because supervisors are busy. Try this:

  • Ask at the same time every week, for example Friday afternoon, so it becomes routine.
  • Make it easy: have your logbook open at the right page with your entries done.
  • Show them this list if they ask what to write.
  • Do not fill several weeks at once at the end. Different weeks signed in the same pen on the same day look suspicious to assessors.

If you have weeks with little work, see what to write in your logbook when no work was done.

Keep your own entries strong

The supervisor can only comment well if your entries are clear. See how to fill your SIWES logbook properly and the SIWES weekly report sample.

If you struggle to describe what you did, the MonoEd SIWES Logbook helps you turn rough notes into clear daily and weekly entries.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I write the supervisor comment myself?

No. The comment must be written and signed by your supervisor. You can suggest wording, but they should write it.

How often should my supervisor comment?

Usually once a week, at the end of each week's entries. Some logbooks also have a monthly or final comment.

What if my supervisor only writes "Good"?

It is better than nothing, but ask politely for one more line about what you did that week. Show them a few examples above.

Does the supervisor comment affect my grade?

In many schools, yes. The logbook and supervisor remarks are part of your SIWES assessment, together with your report and defence. See how SIWES is graded.

Should the supervisor stamp every week?

Signature and date are the minimum. Some schools also want the company stamp on each week or at the end. Check your handbook.
